My work is an abstract expressionist take on flowers using color, texture, brush mark, and composition to evoke a feeling. My work strives to communicate a feeling to others using a visual image that we all can connect with and relate to. A flower is raw, natural, delicate, and full of fleeting life. Within my work, I use this natural work of art and recreate it using paint to suggest a deeper emotion.
I am concentrating on painting groups of flowers utilizing an abstract expressionistic style. The groups of flowers are among foliage in a natural setting. The flower species varies between paintings. Flowers reflect energy and life. I want to reflect this in my paintings and enhance it through the visual language that paint can create.
Elements that are essential in my work to achieve what I am trying to communicate are color, texture, brushstroke, and composition. Color combination is used to create a harmony and relationship with one another. The texture of paint is applied thickly to create depth and a tactual quality. Expressive varied brushstrokes are visible and communicative to reinforce emotions with long sweeps of paint to choppy quick marks. Flowers represented on the canvas are placed to create fluidity and visual movement within the work of art. Canvases will predominantly be of large scale to surround and capture the viewer again enhancing and reinforcing a mood trying to be presented.
My artwork will take the viewer one step further, beyond the physical and into the emotional state. Emotions are a big part of what makes up a person. It’s what makes us tick, react, and can consume us completely. Emotions can break into who we are and reveal truth, as described in a quote by Robert Ebert “Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you.”
